Takayama Festival is held twice a year, at Hie Shrine in spring and Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine in autumn. Takayama Festival is one of the best three festivals in Japan. It originated in the Kanamori Clan Era (1585-1692). The first shrine float was made in 1718. Mechanical dolls and the Modoshiguruma Cart represent skillful craftsmanship. About 1,000 townspeople take part in the parade, carrying shrine carts, performing lion dances, shrine dances, chicken fighting dances, as well as playing palace music and walking as guards clad in traditional kamishimo costumes. At night, 100 lanterns are lit on each cart. It is a very exciting and colorful festival.

11,000 lavenders at Pascal Lavender Park give off a very sweet aroma. Walking through the park is like walking on a purple cloud. In July every year, a lavender festival is held in both Pascal Kiyomi and Mikkaichi Lavender Parks.

The third Sunday every October is festival day. The main feature of the event is the shishimai (a dance performed by 30 men with lion heads). There are many shishimai dances throughout Japan, but this is the only one in which so many human lions perform.

Nine unmarried women are chosen from Hida area to serve the shrine god as the living hina dolls for the festival. This is the only event of its kind in Japan. After the shrine ceremony, the nine women throw pieces of mochi(rice cake) for the visitors to catch.

The Garyu Sakura cherry tree symbolizes Miya Village. When the cherry is in full bloom around the end of April, the festival is held on Sundays and holidays. Various shows and a bazaar attract tourists.

A dance in which Kinzo (boy) and Okame (girl) fight against a lion and win is performed. Though it is a brave story, the performers' movements are humorous. The dance is dedicated to the three shrines located within the town on May 3rd and 4th and on Sep. 15th.

Every April 19 at midnight, cold in cherry-blossom time, hollow note of the drums and cheering gallant men ring through the time-honored town. This festival is unusual. Okoshi-daiko (Taiko drums) is vigorous festival in which people are freed from deep snow and delighted with the arrival of spring. Men are pulling floats in hopes of the townfs development. In the next day, April 20, nine gorgeous floats of the festival are displayed elegantly.

Sassa Narimasa was a warrior during war time, some 400 years ago. Anybody can join in this festival parade of old time warriors. Legend has it that Sassa buried gold in a mountain and so there is a treasure hunt. The winner gets ¥100,000.

This is a festival of six decorated carts from six communities of the town pulled by young men clad in a happi coat. The wood carved decorations on each cart appeals to everyone. Many lanterns are lit on the carts at night when the festival is most exciting. May 3 is the festival day.

This festival is held in mid-September and is a festival of folk songs and dances performed on a shrine stage. The songs and dances such as Mugiya-bushi and Kokiriko-bushi of the Gokayama region are derived from the Heike refugee legends. Local people also enjoy dancing through the streets. Groups of 20 dancers or more compete by performing creative dances uniquely arranged by each group based on various folk songs including Mugiya-bushi. This event is called "Janto-koi-Mugiya" and adds further excitement to the festival.

May 14 and 15. The wood carving decoration on the carts are the refined works of skillful craftsmen of this town. Between carts, an Ioriyatai cart in the shape of a traditional Kyoto restaurant serves as a stage for a traditional music group. This is a 300 year-old festival.

Carts and the Ioriyatai are on exhibition. A unique building next to the museum is called Kurakairo, which is the town history museum. The structure itself is a copy of a storage building typical to a rich merchant.

340 years ago, a sacred spirit from Ise Shrine was welcomed by the people who had lit lanterns. This was the start of the Yotaka Lantern Festival. Now, the seven decorated lanterns are 7 meters tall. 25 lanterns in total are carried by young men throughout the town on the nights of May 1 and 2.
